The Rhodesian Ridgeback, or African Lion Dog, is so named because of a line of hair growing down its back in the opposite direction of the rest of the coat. No other breed has this unique characteristic. Zimbabwe hunters discovered that when used in packs, this breed was a very effective lion hunter, hence its other common name. Because of its African heritage, this canine does quite well in high temperatures. Being a large, strong-willed pooch, Ridgebacks need socialized and trained early and consistently throughout its lifespan.
